ENTREPRENEURIAL OPPORTUNITIES GROUP
Helping Pharmacy Students Pursue Careers in Independent Pharmacy
Thank you for your interest in the Entrepreneurial Opportunities Group (EOG). The EOG was formed by Kansas Independent Pharmacy Service Corporation (KPSC) in the fall of 1997 to help promote the advantages and opportunities available in independent pharmacy practice to University of Kansas pharmacy students. The EOG is made up of experienced Kansas independent pharmacy practitioners, KPSC CEO Peter Stern and Associate Dean Gene Hotchkiss (as a liaison with the School of Pharmacy). The stated goals of the EOG are:
- to help students understand and gain interest in independent pharmacy
- to help identify independent pharmacists as information resources
- to complement activities organized by the KU School of Pharmacy related to independent pharmacy opportunities
- to identify potential entrepreneurs from the KU pharmacy student population
- to provide ongoing guidance to potential entrepreneurs
EOG Scholarships
KPSC’s EOG initiative provides scholarships to one or more University of Kansas School of Pharmacy students each year who have demonstrably shown interest in pursuing independent pharmacy practice as a career choice. EOG scholarships are awarded in late May to early June for use in the following academic year. The EOG does allow past EOG scholarship winners to reapply for the chance to receive additional funds. However, the EOG reserves the right, if it deems appropriate, to give preference to applicants who have not received an EOG scholarship in the past. KPSC, which operates to provide various services for Kansas independent pharmacies, has been the primary contributor to the EOG scholarship fund since 1998. Additional funds have periodically been made available through contributions from independent pharmacists and from certain wholesale drug distribution companies. Scholarship awards in the past have generally ranged from $500 to $1,500.
Information on the EOG scholarship process is made available in September of each school year through the NCPA Student Chapter. EOG scholarships are open to students who are members of the University of Kansas NCPA Student Chapter. Students may apply for an EOG scholarship once per school year. Final decisions on the scholarship awards rest entirely with the EOG.

Participation in Activities/Point Tracking Form
To pursue an EOG scholarship, students must participate in a certain number of approved activities that will help them learn more about independent pharmacy as a career choice. A list of approved activities and points that may be obtained for each activity are included in the EOG Scholarship Point Tracking Form. Points may be accrued between September 18, 2009 through April 16, 2010 for the present year. A minimum of 10 points must be accumulated by 3P students (a minimum of 12 points for 4P and 5P students) by April 16, 2010. Please note that the EOG reception at the KPhA Annual Meeting usually takes place before the application due date. Information on this activity will be sent from KPSC to the School of Pharmacy.
All students pursuing an EOG scholarship must submit the online Point Tracking Form to KPSC/EOG no later than 2 weeks after each event attended. Participation in all activities will be verified with the School of Pharmacy.
Essays
All students pursuing an EOG scholarship will be sent information in February requesting answers to one or more essay questions concerning interest in independent pharmacy and future career plans. Essays will be emailed to the email address on record in mid February, 2010 and will be due March 31, 2010. All essays will need to be submitted online through this website.
Interviews
Interviews of students who meet or exceed the point minimum requirement on the EOG Scholarship Point Tracking Form as of April 16, 2010 and who have turned in responses to the essay questions by March 31, 2010, will be invited to participate in the last qualifying component for an EOG scholarship - an interview with 2 members of the EOG. Interviews will take place somewhere between the last half of April through the first week of May, 2010.
